Medjugorje pilgrimage guide
A journey centered on prayer.
WHY PILGRIMS COME HERE
Pilgrims come to Medjugorje for Mass, confession, the Rosary, and a quieter rhythm. The Vatican's note "The Queen of Peace," published by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith on September 19, 2024, granted a nihil obstat for devotion connected with this spiritual experience; it does not declare the reported apparitions supernatural.
Key facts
- Medjugorje is in Bosnia and Herzegovina: not Croatia, not the EU, and not Schengen. The currency is the convertible mark, with euros widely accepted.

Sacred places to discover
St. James Church
The parish church and the center of the communal prayer program, which begins at 6:00 p.m. (summer) or 5:00 p.m. (winter).
Apparition Hill
A rocky devotional climb of about 200 m, 20–40 minutes up; participation should be optional.
Cross Mountain
A demanding hillside route to the 520 m summit with Stations of the Cross, 1.5–2.5 hours round trip.
Parish prayer spaces
Time for adoration and personal prayer according to the parish program, with confessions available in many languages before and during the evening program.
Make the journey your own
- Make time for confession and adoration
- Join the parish prayer program each evening
- Choose a hill walk only if the terrain is suitable
When to go
Plan around the parish program, heat, and group events. The anniversary on June 25 and the Youth Festival in early August bring the largest crowds. Summer climbs are physically demanding in the heat; spring and autumn are more comfortable for the hills.
Walking & practical expectations
The parish area and the hills are very different experiences. The village itself is flat and easily walked, while Podbrdo and Križevac are rough rock paths that need closed shoes and a free hand. Rocky climbs are not required for a meaningful pilgrimage.
Suggested pacing is planning guidance. Specific access, liturgies, and services require confirmation.
Planning this pilgrimage
Planning overview
A responsible Medjugorje pilgrimage centers on the parish's ordinary spiritual life: Mass, confession, the Rosary, adoration, and personal prayer. It does not depend on a reported visionary or an extraordinary event. The Vatican's note "The Queen of Peace," published September 19, 2024, grants a nihil obstat for the devotion without affirming the apparitions as supernatural.
Settle into the stay
Several nights give room to learn the prayer program and rest between activities. The parish evening program begins at 6:00 p.m. in summer and 5:00 p.m. in winter with the Rosary, followed by Mass and further prayer; English Mass is usually in the morning, and confessions are heard in many languages before and during the evening program. Choose lodging and meal arrangements that support this rhythm; four to six nights is typical. A crowded schedule of extra excursions can make a supposedly reflective stay feel as busy as any other tour.
Keep the hills optional
Apparition Hill (Podbrdo) rises about 200 m above the village on a rocky path, 20–40 minutes up for a fit walker. Cross Mountain (Križevac) reaches a 520 m summit with the Stations of the Cross, 1.5–2.5 hours round trip on rough rock, beneath the concrete cross erected in 1933. Ask for an honest account of the route, timing, and alternative for those who do not climb. The parish area can support a meaningful pilgrimage without either ascent.
Understand the geography
Medjugorje is in Bosnia and Herzegovina, outside the EU and the Schengen area; the currency is the convertible mark, though euros are widely accepted. The nearest airport is Mostar (about 25 km); Split, Dubrovnik, and Sarajevo are each 2.5–3 hours by road, and routes from Split or Dubrovnik cross the Croatia–Bosnia border. U.S. passport holders need no visa for stays under 90 days in either country. Confirm the gateway, transfer plan, and document requirements before purchasing flights. The parish anniversary on June 25 and the Youth Festival in early August are the most crowded dates. A coastal extension can be worthwhile when it has sufficient time and a clear place in the itinerary.
Can I have a quiet pilgrimage in Medjugorje?
Yes, mainly by choosing your dates. Avoid the parish anniversary on June 25 and the Youth Festival (Mladifest) in early August, which is extremely crowded. Outside those periods, choose appropriate accommodation, limit extra excursions, and leave unscheduled time. The evening program (from 6:00 p.m. in summer, 5:00 p.m. in winter) will still be busy, and quiet is a planning preference, not something an operator can guarantee everywhere.
Tell the organizer whether you prefer communal activities or more personal time. The same destination can feel very different with a tightly packed schedule.
