For a first pilgrimage, Sarria to Santiago is the usual choice: the best signposting, the most beds and cafés, luggage transfer on every stage, and the strongest pilgrim community. Tui to Santiago is quieter and flatter and passes through Pontevedra and Padrón. Ferrol to Santiago is the least crowded.

With seven nights in Spain, a pilgrim can fly into Santiago, travel by bus or train to the starting town, walk five or six days, and keep one full day in Santiago for the Pilgrim Mass and the Pilgrim Office.
