Seven of the Twelve Apostles are buried in Rome: Peter under the high altar of St. Peter's Basilica, Philip and James the Less in the Basilica of the Twelve Holy Apostles, Bartholomew at San Bartolomeo all'Isola on Tiber Island, and Simon and Jude under the altar of St. Joseph in St. Peter's left transept; St. Paul lies under the altar of St. Paul Outside the Walls, confirmed in 2009. The others are James the Greater at Santiago de Compostela, Matthew in Salerno Cathedral, Andrew in Amalfi Cathedral, Thomas at San Thome Basilica in Chennai, India, Matthias at St. Matthias' Abbey in Trier, Germany, and John at Ephesus, Turkey.
Peter's bones were identified in the excavations that the Scavi tour visits (age 15 and over, booked months ahead). Andrew's relics reached Amalfi in 1208; his head was returned to Patras, Greece, in 1964. Major relics of Thomas have been at Ortona, Italy, since 1258.
St. Mark the Evangelist, not one of the Twelve, rests in St. Mark's Basilica, Venice.
