Carlo was born in London on May 3, 1991, and grew up in Milan. He went to daily Mass from the age of seven, taught himself to program, and used that skill to assemble an exhibition on the Eucharistic miracles recognized by the Church, which has since travelled to parishes on every continent. He died in Monza on October 12, 2006, offering his suffering for the Pope and the Church.

He asked to be buried in Assisi, a town he loved. His remains have rested since April 2019 in the Shrine of the Spogliazione, the church of Santa Maria Maggiore where St. Francis renounced his possessions before the bishop. He was beatified there on October 10, 2020.

Pope Leo XIV canonized him in St. Peter's Square on September 7, 2025, together with Pier Giorgio Frassati, another young layman from northern Italy. He is one of the five patrons of World Youth Day Seoul 2027.
