If a papal event is central to the trip, verify the official calendar before committing. The General Audience is held on Wednesdays at about 9:00–9:30 a.m. with free tickets from the Prefecture of the Papal Household, but it is not held when the Pope is away, including parts of July, and St. Peter’s closes to visitors during papal ceremonies. A Wednesday in Rome does not by itself guarantee attendance at an audience.
Rome · YOUR QUESTION, ANSWERED
When is the best time for a Catholic pilgrimage to Rome?
Spring (April–May) and autumn (late September–October) are the best months for a walking-focused Rome pilgrimage, while major celebrations may matter more than weather: Holy Week and Easter, the Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul on June 29, and Christmas. Choose dates after comparing liturgical events, crowd tolerance, and the proposed pace. Note that the Jubilee crowds of 2025 ended on January 6, 2026.
