Check the actual address, vehicle access, evening meal options, and the route to public transport. A hotel’s map position matters more than a broad neighborhood description.
Rome · YOUR QUESTION, ANSWERED
Should I stay near the Vatican or central Rome?
Stay near the Vatican if St. Peter’s and the Vatican Museums are your daily focus; stay in the historic center if the itinerary ranges across the city. St. Peter’s opens at 7:00 a.m., and an early start from a nearby hotel avoids the longest security lines; the Vatican Museums entrance on Viale Vaticano is about a 15-minute walk around the walls from the square. The other major basilicas lie elsewhere: St. Paul Outside the Walls is about 3 km south of the center on Metro Line B, and the Lateran and St. Mary Major are on the east side. Neither neighborhood label guarantees a quiet room, elevator, or short walking distances.
