What is the water gesture at Lourdes?
The Water Gesture (geste de l’eau) is a prayerful act of drinking the spring water, washing the face and hands, and praying at the fountains and taps near the Grotto. The Sanctuary introduced it in 2020 in place of general immersion in the baths, and it is now the ordinary way pilgrims engage with the water. It is a devotional practice, not a medical treatment or a guarantee of healing.
