Pilgrim Pace™ Easy · Shrine walking & a travel day

Give two great Marian shrines the time they deserve. Begin with Fátima’s invitation to prayer and peace, then continue to Lourdes for the Grotto, worship, and the sanctuary’s life of service. A proposed air connection separates the two stays; routing will depend on actual schedules.

Carry an intention into the journey.

Choose a reason to go. Keep space for it each day. Return with one practice or act of service you want to carry into ordinary life.

PILGRIM PACE™ — EASY

What Fátima & Lourdes asks of you

Know the journey before you take it.

Typical walking
Approximately 1–2 miles (2–3 km) a day on level sanctuary grounds; more only if you choose the town
Terrain
Paved, mostly flat esplanades at both sanctuaries; some sloping streets in Lourdes town
Stairs
Few; ramps at the main basilicas. Some steps at the Chapel of the Apparitions and the Rosary Basilica
Hills and elevation
Minimal at Fátima; Lourdes town rises above the sanctuary
Standing
Processions and outdoor Masses involve standing; seating is available for those who need it
Longest touring days
The Fátima-to-Lourdes transfer day; touring days are approximately 4–5 hours
Pilgrim’s Time
Substantial: open afternoons and evenings at both shrines
Accessibility
Both sanctuaries are among the most accessible pilgrimage sites in Europe, with wheelchair lanes and volunteers. Lourdes baths and the Grotto have managed queues.

Why this rating

Both shrines are built for pilgrims who cannot walk far: level ground, short distances between sites, and long unscheduled periods for prayer. The one demanding element is the travel day between them.

To be confirmed with the tour operator before departure: Transfer day timings; Hotel distance from each sanctuary.

OPTIONAL · DAYS 11–13

Optional rest & renewal: Lisbon & the Atlantic coast

A proposed three-day rest-and-renewal extension on the Atlantic coast west of Lisbon. From Lourdes, pilgrims fly back to Lisbon and settle at Cascais, a seaside town 30 minutes from the airport. Each day holds one outing and protected time to rest: Sintra’s palaces one day, Lisbon’s old churches another, and the ocean in between. No coach before 9 a.m.

DAY 11 · R&RLourdes to the Atlantic

A morning flight from Toulouse or Tarbes-Lourdes to Lisbon and a short transfer to Cascais. Lunch by the harbor, an afternoon on the seafront promenade, and Mass at the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption in the old town for those who wish.

Overnight: CascaisRest day; no coach before 9 a.m.
DAY 12 · R&RSintra and the edge of Europe

Late breakfast, then a half-day in Sintra — the Pena Palace or the National Palace, not both — followed by lunch in the village. A late-afternoon stop at Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe, before returning to Cascais.

Overnight: CascaisRest day; no coach before 9 a.m.
DAY 13 · R&RLisbon’s old city at an easy pace

Morning Mass at the Church of St. Anthony, built over the saint’s birthplace, and a short walk through the Alfama to the cathedral. Lunch in the city, then the afternoon free: the Jerónimos Monastery in Belém, the tile museum, or rest in Cascais. A proposed shared farewell dinner closes the pilgrimage.

Overnight: CascaisRest day; no coach before 9 a.m.

Optional. Pilgrims may return home after day 10; the extension is priced separately.

An alternative extension continues overland from Lourdes to the Basque coast — two or three nights in San Sebastián or Biarritz — for groups who prefer not to fly back through Lisbon.

Prayer & the sacraments

Mass, confession, and prayer opportunities are central to the intended journey. A priest has not yet been appointed, and specific celebrations have not been reserved. Confirmed details will accompany a bookable departure.

HAVE A PRIEST YOU’D LOVE TO MAKE THIS PILGRIMAGE WITH?

Invite your priest.

Sometimes a pilgrimage begins with one parishioner asking the question.

What happens next: nothing is sent automatically. Bold Pilgrim reads your note, then writes to Father ourselves, once, with a plain description of Fátima & Lourdes and what leading it would ask of him. We mention that a parishioner asked, and we do not share your email with anyone.

For qualifying group departures, Bold Pilgrim can arrange hosted travel for the priest spiritual leader, allowing him to focus on his ministry to the pilgrims. Final terms are confirmed in writing with each departure.
