The friars of the Porziuncola list the conditions: sacramental confession within eight days before or after the visit, participation in Mass with Eucharistic Communion, a visit to the church with the Our Father and the Creed, prayer for the intentions of the Pope, and the interior detachment from sin that every plenary indulgence requires. The indulgence can be gained for oneself or for a deceased person, once a day.

At the Porziuncola the small chapel stands in the middle of the basilica nave; the basilica is open 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 to 7:00 p.m., with entry from 6:30 a.m. for the first Mass. Weekday Masses are at 7:00, 8:00, 9:00, 11:00 and 6:00 p.m.; on Sundays there is an English Mass at 11:00 a.m. Confessions are heard every morning and afternoon, Monday to Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., so all the conditions can be met in one visit.

On August 1 and 2 the basilica runs a program of vigils and Masses and the town fills; pilgrims who want the Pardon without the crowds can come any other day of the year.
