What Fátima is not: a scenic town or a destination with much to see beyond the Sanctuary, the two basilicas, the Chapel of the Apparitions, and the seers' village of Aljustrel a short distance away. Pilgrims who come expecting a Lourdes-style setting with a river and mountains sometimes feel let down. Those who come to pray, go to confession, and walk the prayer area slowly tend to say the opposite.
The daily program published by the Shrine runs from a 7:30 a.m. Mass through Masses in several languages during the day, the rosary at 12:00 and 6:30 p.m. in the Chapel of the Apparitions, and the 9:30 p.m. rosary followed by the candlelight procession in the prayer area. Since February 2025 that procession takes place every day of the year, weather permitting, not only between Easter and Advent. A day tripper who leaves at 5:00 p.m. misses it.
A reasonable plan is to arrive by early afternoon, keep the evening for the procession, and use the next morning for Mass, confession in the Chapels of Reconciliation under the Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity, and Aljustrel before moving on. The existing page on a day trip from Lisbon covers the bus logistics. On the 12th and 13th of May and October the town fills to capacity, so book a bed months ahead or plan a different week.
