The baths at Lourdes today offer two forms: the water gesture, in which pilgrims drink the spring water, wash face and hands, and pray, and immersion in the piscines, which the Hospitalite Notre-Dame de Lourdes again offers to sick and able pilgrims in season, without reservation, from about 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. The water gesture runs about 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. from April to November. In winter the baths close except by arrangement for groups of sick pilgrims.
Nothing special is worn: hospitaliers help each person undress in a cubicle and wrap them in a wet cloth before the brief immersion and a short prayer. Modest underwear is fine; towels are not used.
Waits of 1 to 2 hours are common in July, August, and on large pilgrimage days; early morning is shortest. The water gesture became the ordinary form in 2020 and remains available for anyone who prefers not to be immersed; confirm current practice on the sanctuary website.
