A meaningful pilgrimage and eligibility for a particular certificate are separate questions. If the Compostela matters to you, consult the Pilgrim Office requirements before selecting stages. Do not rely on a tour’s vague promise of “doing the Camino.”
Santiago & the Camino · YOUR QUESTION, ANSWERED
Do I have to walk the whole Camino?
No. You can walk a section, take a longer route in stages, or visit Santiago without completing a walking route. The Pilgrim Office requires only the last 100 km on foot (or 200 km by bicycle) for the Compostela, which is why Sarria, about 115 km from Santiago on the Camino Francés, is the most common starting point; most groups cover it in 5–6 walking days. On the Camino Portugués the usual 100-km start is Tui.
