As of October 2026, Pope Leo XIV has publicly called for a Jubilee of the Redemption in 2033, the 2,000th anniversary of the death and resurrection of Jesus, but no bull of indiction setting its dates, Holy Doors, or indulgence has been published. The first statement came on November 29, 2025 at the Syriac Orthodox Church of Mor Ephrem in Istanbul, where he invited all Christians to walk together toward the Jubilee of Redemption in 2033 with a view to returning to Jerusalem.
He repeated the invitation to an Orthodox delegation at the Vatican in June 2026, asking that the journey toward the second millennium of the Redemption be made together by all Christians. Reports on the closing of the Holy Door of St. Peter's on January 6, 2026 noted that the door is expected to stay sealed until that Holy Year.
Precedents are 1933 and 1983 to 1984. What exists today is a stated intention centered on Jerusalem, not a program; the next ordinary Jubilee remains 2050.
