Easy means a relaxed physical pace: generally shorter walking periods, fewer stairs, shorter touring periods, frequent opportunities to sit or rest, and substantial Pilgrim’s Time. Moderate means regular walking and standing, which may include cobblestones, uneven surfaces, stairs, hills, longer periods on foot, and moderately full touring days. Difficult means significant walking or prolonged standing, which may include substantial stairs, hills, elevation changes, challenging terrain, long days on foot, or physically demanding pilgrimage activities.

The rating is never assigned by destination alone. A Rome itinerary with Vatican security queues, cobblestones, museum walking, and coach drop-offs some distance from church doors is Moderate even though Rome is an urban destination; a Fátima and Lourdes itinerary on level sanctuary ground can be Easy. Where an itinerary does not yet give enough information to state a distance or a day length, the page says so and marks the item for confirmation by the tour operator rather than guessing.

Pilgrim Pace is different from Pilgrim’s Time. Pilgrim Pace tells you how demanding the journey is. Pilgrim’s Time is the intentional unscheduled or lightly scheduled time built into each day for prayer, reflection, rest, a café, confession, or conversation. The two appear together on every pilgrimage page but are never combined into one rating.

The rating is always paired with its word, so it does not depend on color alone. Pilgrim Pace is a planning guide, not a guarantee: actual walking distances, terrain, weather, crowds, transportation access, and accessibility conditions may vary during a journey.
